BP-002: The Dead Sea and the Ring of Fire

Abstract
Ezekiel describes water flowing eastward from the Temple into the Arabah and the sea, where the water is healed, fish become abundant, fishermen spread their nets, and trees flourish along the river. Zechariah describes living waters flowing from Jerusalem toward both the eastern and western seas. Joel describes a fountain emerging from the house of the Lord. These texts have existed for centuries. What has changed is the landscape now visible beside them.
The Dead Sea remains lethally saline to fish, but it is retreating rapidly. Fresh and brackish groundwater now appears in underwater springs and shoreline sinkholes; dense microbial communities live around some submerged outlets; vegetation grows near freshwater pools; and small fish have been documented in at least one sinkhole pool beside the sea. At the same time, significant earthquakes and multiple active volcanoes have drawn renewed attention to widely separated portions of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This paper asks whether the resulting pattern is coincidence, convergence, foreshadowing, or prophecy beginning to unfold. It does not claim to know what history has not yet finished revealing.
Central proposition.
None of these events proves prophetic fulfillment by itself. Their geographic, textual, and temporal convergence nevertheless deserves serious examination rather than either sensational declaration or reflexive dismissal.
1. What This Paper Claims—and What It Does Not
The evidence establishes
- The Dead Sea is the lowest natural land or water surface on Earth and has been retreating rapidly as inflow has been diverted and water is lost from the closed basin.[1]
- Fresh to brackish underwater springs emerge from the Judea Group aquifer and support dense microbial communities on the Dead Sea floor.[2]
- Fresh groundwater contributes to salt dissolution, cavities, sinkholes, and newly exposed shoreline pools.[3]
- Small fish have been photographed in a freshwater sinkhole pool beside the Dead Sea, not in the hypersaline main body of the sea.[4]
- Significant earthquakes and volcanic activity have recently occurred across several widely separated portions of the Pacific region.[5]
The evidence does not establish
- That the Dead Sea itself has become fresh or now supports fish.
- That existing groundwater has been traced from beneath the Temple Mount to a present outlet at the Dead Sea.
- That recent Pacific events form one synchronized geological episode.
- That global earthquake or volcanic frequency has departed conclusively from its historical range.
- That Scripture authorizes a date for the return of Christ or the completion of these prophecies.
The paper advances a narrower argument: the physical events are real; their resemblance to specific biblical images is substantial enough to merit theological attention; and incomplete fulfillment should not be confused with either completed fulfillment or no movement at all.
2. The Dead Sea Is Changing
The Dead Sea is a terminal lake. Water enters, but no river carries it onward to an ocean. Its surface lies more than 400 meters below sea level, making it the lowest natural land or water surface on Earth. Diversion of tributary water, industrial use, and evaporation have produced a severe negative water balance and a rapidly retreating shoreline.[6]
As the lake level falls, the adjacent groundwater system adjusts. Fresher groundwater moves into areas formerly occupied by dense Dead Sea brine, dissolves subsurface salt, creates cavities, and contributes to shoreline collapse. Thousands of sinkholes have formed along the western shore. Some fill with groundwater, creating small habitats radically different from the hypersaline lake only a short distance away.[7]

A 2012 peer-reviewed study concluded that the freshwater component of the underwater springs originated in the Judea Group aquifer. The same study found diverse microbial ecosystems tightly associated with the outlets.[8] In 2024, researchers described previously unknown halite chimneys produced when groundwater-derived brine emerged and rapidly crystallized salt—a visible sign that subsurface flow continues beneath the lake.[9]
The decisive distinction
Fish are not presently living throughout the Dead Sea. They have been observed in freshwater pools created in the changing shoreline environment. That distinction prevents exaggeration, but it does not make the development meaningless. A place identified with salt and death is now revealing freshwater, vegetation, microorganisms, and localized fish-bearing habitats along its margins.
3. What the Prophets Actually Describe
The strongest case begins by allowing the biblical texts to set their own conditions rather than reducing them to the vague prediction that “water will appear somewhere near the Dead Sea.”
Water emerges from beneath the Temple threshold, travels east, descends into the desert plain, and enters the sea. The sea's waters are healed; living creatures and very many fish appear; fishermen stand from En-gedi to En-eglaim; and trees grow along both banks.[10]
After dramatic events at the Mount of Olives, living waters flow out from Jerusalem—half toward the eastern sea and half toward the western sea—in both summer and winter.[11]
In the setting of the Day of the Lord, a fountain comes forth from the house of the Lord and waters the Valley of Shittim. The precise geographic reach of this image is debated, but its Temple-water theme parallels Ezekiel.[12]
Isaiah adds the broader restoration image: waters break out in the wilderness, streams appear in the desert, and the parched ground becomes a pool.[13] Revelation later presents a river of life proceeding from the throne of God, with the tree of life on its banks and leaves for healing.[14] The repeated biblical pattern is not water alone. It is water from the divine dwelling, movement into barrenness, healing, life, fruitfulness, and restoration.

4. Jerusalem, the Watershed, and the Lowest Place on Earth
Jerusalem stands on the Judean mountain ridge between the Mediterranean basin and the Dead Sea Rift. It is not literally the highest point in the entire region, but it occupies high ground on or near the hydrologic divide. Rainfall recharges the Judea Group aquifer along the mountain crest. From that divide, groundwater flows in both directions: west toward the Mediterranean basin and east or southeast toward the Dead Sea Rift.[15]
The aquifer is composed principally of karstic limestone and dolomite, with some marl—not a simple mass of sandstone. Water enters fractures, joints, cavities, and soluble carbonate rock. It follows pressure gradients, enlarges pathways through dissolution, mixes with older saline water, and may eventually emerge as springs. The Dead Sea functions as the deepest regional groundwater base level.[16]
This makes the eastward movement described by Ezekiel and Zechariah geographically and hydrologically coherent. It does not demonstrate that a present spring can be traced directly to the Temple Mount. The current scientific finding is broader: freshwater from the Judean mountain aquifer moves toward and emerges at the Dead Sea. The biblical claim is more specific: living water will proceed from the Temple or Jerusalem and transform the sea.
Geological finding
The physical mechanism is plausible; the prophetic identification remains unproven. Geology explains how water can move from the Judean highlands toward the Dead Sea. Scripture identifies a future source, direction, and transforming result that present science has not established in full.
5. The River Beneath the Surface
A remembered performance supplied the governing image for this paper. Roger Breland, founder and director of the Mobile-based Christian group Truth, delivered the spoken passage that introduces Bill and Gloria Gaither's 1973 composition “The Church Triumphant.” Truth's large vocal ensemble, rhythm section, orchestra, and brass gave the words unusual force.[17]
“The purest water is the stream that bursts crystal clear into the sunlight after it has forced its way through solid rock.”[18]
Breland first describes the powerful current of a rushing river as undiminished even when it is forced underground. Then comes the image of that water forcing its way through solid rock and bursting crystal clear into the sunlight. The original passage is a metaphor for the Church: driven from sight, mistaken for dead, yet still alive and moving until it emerges again. It is not a geological argument and should not be treated as evidence. Its importance here is interpretive. It gives language to the danger of confusing hidden movement with absence.
The author remembers hearing Breland and Truth perform in churches at Fairhope and Loxley, Alabama. Decades later, discussion of groundwater emerging near the Dead Sea brought that spoken image back with unexpected force: a current driven underground, fighting its way through rock, and reappearing in the light. Memory did not prove the prophecy. It revealed the question.
Never mistake hidden for dead
Water may move unseen for years before appearing at the surface. Tectonic strain may accumulate silently before the ground breaks. Prophecy may remain text on a page until events make its geography newly visible. Hidden does not mean inactive—but neither does emergence automatically prove divine fulfillment.
6. The Ring of Fire Is Active—and It Usually Is
The Pacific Ring of Fire is not a single fault or one circular machine. It is a broad belt of plate boundaries, subduction zones, volcanic arcs, and trenches surrounding much of the Pacific. The United States Geological Survey states that approximately 81 percent of the world's largest earthquakes occur within this circum-Pacific belt.[19]
Recent events have made the belt look unusually vivid on news maps. As of August 12, 2026, the following reviewed USGS events were among those drawing attention:

The Smithsonian–USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for July 30 through August 5 also identified new activity or unrest at Ring of Fire volcanoes including Fuego in Guatemala, Krakatau in Indonesia, Puracé in Colombia, and Telica in Nicaragua, alongside numerous continuing eruptions.[24] In ordinary language, large portions of the Ring appeared to be “lighting up.”
Scientific calibration is essential. The USGS expects approximately sixteen major earthquakes worldwide in an average year: about fifteen in the magnitude-7 range and one magnitude 8 or greater. Some years exceed that average substantially.[25] The Smithsonian reports that forty to fifty eruptions commonly continue at any given time and states that the historical record does not demonstrate an overall increase in volcanic activity.[26]
What “the whole Ring is on fire” can responsibly mean
It can describe the striking geographic spread of current headlines and active systems. It should not be used as a scientific claim that every segment is erupting, that all events share one cause, or that the entire belt has entered an unprecedented state. The visual impression is real. The stronger statistical conclusion has not been established.
7. Earthquakes, Birth Pains, and the Limits of Date-Setting
The theological study of the “last things”—including Christ's return, resurrection, judgment, and the final restoration of creation—is called eschatology. Apocalyptic literature is a related biblical form that presents divine judgment and restoration through visions, symbols, cosmic disturbances, angels, and dramatic events. Daniel and Revelation are its clearest examples; Ezekiel and Zechariah also contain substantial apocalyptic material.
In the Olivet discourse, Jesus speaks of wars, famines, pestilences, and “earthquakes, in divers places,” then says, “All these are the beginning of sorrows.”[27] The Greek image commonly translated “sorrows” carries the sense of birth pains. Luke likewise records “great earthquakes” in various places alongside other fearful events.[28]
Birth pains provide a pattern of development, but the text does not give a modern statistical threshold by which every cluster of earthquakes becomes a prophetic clock. Earthquakes occurred before the first century, during it, and throughout the centuries that followed. Their presence alone cannot identify a generation or calculate a date.
Jesus also states that no one knows the day and hour.[29] Responsible eschatology therefore holds attention and humility together. It watches without pretending to possess God's calendar.
8. Coincidence, Convergence, Foreshadowing, or Fulfillment?
The terms are not interchangeable. Much confusion disappears when each is given a clear boundary.

Natural explanation does not settle the theological question. Within biblical theology, providence ordinarily operates through physical causes. Rain, gravity, aquifers, faults, and plate tectonics do not exclude divine purpose merely because they can be studied. The reverse is equally important: belief in providence does not permit every dramatic natural event to be labeled a fulfilled prophecy.
The strongest skeptical argument is not that nothing is happening. Much is happening. The stronger argument is that every observation has a natural explanation, that freshwater springs existed before modern prophecy reporting, that the Ring of Fire is normally active, and that global communication makes simultaneous events feel rarer than they are. This paper accepts those facts. It asks whether natural explanation is the end of the question or merely an account of mechanism.
Coincidence remains possible. Fulfillment remains unproven. Dismissal, however, becomes more difficult when geography, mechanism, imagery, and timing begin appearing in the same frame.
9. Judgment
Scientifically, the Dead Sea phenomena are real natural events. Fresh and brackish groundwater is emerging from the Judea Group aquifer; microbial life is concentrated around underwater springs; sinkholes are exposing freshwater habitats; and small fish have been observed in at least one pool beside the lake. The Dead Sea itself remains hypersaline and has not become Ezekiel's fish-filled sea.
Scientifically, the Ring of Fire is displaying destructive and geographically widespread activity, but such activity is characteristic of the belt. The present record does not establish that the entire Ring is acting as one system or that global seismic and volcanic activity has entered an unprecedented era.
Biblically, the correspondence is more specific than a generic prediction of water and earthquakes. Ezekiel places water at the Temple, directs it east into the Arabah and sea, and describes healing, fish, fishermen, and trees. Zechariah explicitly sends living water from Jerusalem toward the eastern sea. Joel places a fountain at the house of the Lord. Jesus places earthquakes in diverse locations among the beginning of birth pains. Those correspondences are real even when their interpretation remains contested.
Theologically, present events may be coincidence. They may be providential foreshadowing. They may represent the earliest movement of prophecy toward fulfillment. This paper is not prepared to declare which. Its conclusion is that the question has become reasonable, the evidence deserves preservation, and this is an extraordinarily interesting time to be alive.

You be the judge—but ultimately, God will.
Never mistake what is hidden for what is dead. The river may already be moving beneath the surface.
